What is meant by Logical Deduction?

The term logical means "reason, idea, or word” which is rooted from the Greek word logos. Logical Deduction is the process of reasoning from one or more statements (premises) to reach a certain conclusion logically.

In this type of reasoning, a set of statements will be given from which you to detect which statement follows logic. In most of the cases, conclusions will be logical and true, but at times it does not have any logic in it.

Logical deduction generally done correct by using 2 methods.

Syllogism Method

It is the right and easiest method to follow if there are 2 given statements. It is done combining the hypothesis of one statement with the conclusion of another. Therefore it has 2 premises and 1 conclusion.

In this method you have to use abstract thinking and the logical sense should be understood to answer accordingly.

The common pattern used in this method is,

If A = B

B = C

Then the conclusion is A = C

Venn Diagram Concept

The concept of venn diagram is nothing but the representation of a sentence or statement in the form of geometrical figures. This method is best if there are more than 2 statements.

In this method the given statements has to be plotted as a venn diagram and through that the you have to decide the conclusion.

Example

Statement: Some men are women. All women are beautiful.

Conclusions:

  1. All men are beautiful.
  2. All women are men.

Options:

  1. Only conclusion 1 is valid
  2. Only conclusion 2 is valid
  3. Either 1 or 2 is valid
  4. Neither 1 nor 2 is valid
  5. Both 1 and 2 are valid

Answer is option (d). Since one statement is particular, the conclusion must be particular. So neither 1 nor 2 is valid.
